Strike Up the Band

Manual High School Proudly Presents ... Our Band!

(From the 1964 Ivian)

"A long year of activities began for the Manual Band when the marching season opened at the annual Football Jamboree in Butler University's stadium. Performing at each football game, the Manual Redskin Marching Band entertained fans with their intricate movements and fine marching style.

"Band seniors tried their skill at planning and teaching a half-time show to the band for the last game of the season. The show was dedicated to Mr. William Kleyla, director, who was not allowed to view the show until the night it was presented.

"The long hours of practice and hard work paid off when the band again received a first division rating at the Marching Contest at Southport, missing a perfect score by only two points.

"The band was cut from ninety-four to seventy-four for the concert season. This group, the best musicians, played for the Alumni Birthday Party and the Band-Glee Club Winter Concert.

"The Pep Band, a select group of nineteen members chosen from the concert band, played at all home basketball games and pep sessions. The band adds spark and life to the team and Pep Club.

"Providing the music for all Redskin Review acts, the Dance Band made up of seventeen band members, learned some thirty numbers to accompany performers and furnish background music for the show.

"Near the end of second semester, the band once again donned practice clothes and took to the field to prepare to march with the ROTC for Federal Inspection. Performing before their largest audience for the "500" Festival Parade, the Redskins found this a fitting climax to a year of hard work.

"For twenty-two seniors, Commencement was their final concert. Drum Major Diane Eickhoff lead the band for her second year. Captain Charles Overton and Lieutenant Dennis Johnson assisted her in keeping band members in hand. Patty Ebbeler served as Band Secretary; and Sharon Callahan, Historian."
