My 1960s Home - 1317 Prospect Street - Just east of Fountain Square

I sometimes think about the difference in my 2018 home vs the house my family
of five called home back in 1960. Pictured above it is the one with the red door
in this recent photo. It looks better now than it did when I lived there. The empty
lot used to have a three story house with eight apartments just three feet away
from our house. We were close to our neighbors! Funeral homes parked their
hearses in the brick building on the right.

My "one light bulb in the ceiling" room was upstairs in the back and I had
to walk through the ONE bathroom we had to get to the stairs. Nice.

We had one bath tub, no shower. We had one 19 inch black and white TV
which, as you know, received just four "snowy" channels with rabbit ears and
aluminum foil. We got our calls on one rotary phone attached to a party line.
There was no air conditioning which meant that the bedroom I shared with
my brother Glenn was just plain HOT! in the summer.

Every year when we watch "A Christmas Story" and the old man goes to
the basement to get the "clinker" I recall the pungent smell and the dust from
the coal heat we had back then.

Now we have so much technology its crazy. Multiple TVs, AC, Clean heat,
More TV channels than you can count, Wireless Internet, Netflix, Cell phones,
Computers, Microwaves, TWO bathrooms and on and on. Disney's GE
Carousel of Progress was right. It is "A Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow"
but don't you miss the way it used to be just a little bit.

Every now and then I do.

Back in our day we actually had
Christmas Programs!

One of my granddaughters is getting excited about her "Christmas" program. That got me thinking about this Christmas Program photo from my days back at good old Abraham Lincoln school #18.

Check out the players and roles: Kenneth Hartsock - Inn Keeper, Candy Purcell - Angel, Charlie Overton - King, Jerry Lorry - shepherd, Larry Mills - King, Floyd Greenwell - King, and Billy Byrd(me) - Stable Boy.

I'm not sure what my duties weresmiley

Hope you have a Merry Christmas!
