Once I got my license after being thrown out of Drivers Ed (a story for another time) I got to drive my dad's 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 to school. It had a 312 cubic inch Thunderbird engine in it. I would pick up Jack and Ron Palladay and we were off to school in that beast.

One time the exhaust pipe rusted out and it had this great lound sound. It was so lound I actually coasted by the cops when I passed them on the street. I loved going to the Tee-Pee where I would put it in low gear, slouch down in the seat, and let the car lope through the parking lot. "Blub-blub-blub, blub, blub....". I thought it was pretty cool.

In the summer of 1964 I was driving into the back yard where we parked when we lived on Ringgold street by school 18. I stepped on the brakes and there were NONE!!! I opened the car door and I was literally dragging my left foot on the grass trying to stop it as we approached the house. Fortunately there was a slab of concrete at the back door which stopped me from driving into the back of the house. Whew!

Harold Payne and I sat in the yard with a blanket over us to shield us from the hot sun to fix the brake cyclinders which had given out.

This photo (not our car) illustrates how nice it looked.
