Occasionally someone you know changes your life. In my case Dennis Helm was one such person.

December of 1969 I was home from Ohio State for the Christmas Holiday and Helm (or "Worm" as some called him) said, "Byrd, there's a party Friday at Country Club Apartments" (Just west of Madison on Troy). Dennis said, "There will be free beer and women!" Naturally I said, "I'll be there."

Soon after arriving at the party I walked across the room and asked a cute Pike High School graduate named Vicki Hart to dance. Fortunately, for me, she said, "Yes!"  Thanks to Dennis' invitation this June Vicki and I will celebrate fifty-three years of marriage. Dennis literally changed my life.

So today is a sad day. I will miss my friend. During high school we played cards and drank beer at Palladays (yeah, I know!). Later, before meeting Vicki, we hung out at places like "The Shindig." (a dive with a pool table, loud band and Go-Go Girls at Prospect and State street).  As young men we played basketball at the old Dearborn gym with our manual friends. Dennis often said, "Byrd you  never passed the ball." For the record I did, sometimes!

Across the years we played poker with our family and friends. From time to time Vicki and I played Euchre with he and Jane. When I reached my 50th birthday Dennis and Chuck Williams made the trip to Fort Branch Indiana (just north of Evansville) for my party - photo below.

For decades we bantered back and forth about Purdue and IU basketball. We bragged about our kids and grandkids. In September of 2011 for my 65th birthday we rented the Knightstown gym (the home court of the Hickory Huskers). We invited all our friends and family for an afternoon of "old man hoops". Fifty-five people showed up and of course Dennis, Chuck and Charlie were there on the court. It was an awesome day together playing ball with friends and family.

So much of life we shared. So, I will miss Dennis Helm. Tommorrow as I watch IU play Purdue I'll have a cold beer and think of Dennis.

God Speed my friend.

Dennis was one of the first friends i made at Manual.  We had some fun times as we adjusted to high school.

I am so sorry to hear of his passing.

Rest in peace, Denny.

Dennis was such a great guy. I first really got to know Dennis through Redskin Revue. I have only the fondest of memories of him. I will really miss our Facebook connections and seeing him at our class activities. We were always happy to see him and Janey at our events
My heart and prayers go out to Janey and the family.
